Animal Control

The City of Norco Animal Control Division operates an animal shelter for housing stray animals. Animal Control is also responsible for insuring rabies control by providing dog licensing and picking up stray dogs.

Many dogs and cats are not claimed by their owners each year and are available for adoption after impoundment of six business days.  Many dogs and cats, puppies and kittens are turned into the Shelter as stray or owner relinquishments. To view animals available at our Shelter, please visit www.Petfinder.com.

Animal Control is also responsible for enforcing animal-related Ordinances in the City of Norco.

What About Dog Licenses?
All dogs must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed with the City. The dog licensing program insures rabies control and is mandated by the State of California and City of Norco Ordinance.

City of Norco dog licenses expire each year on September 30. The month of October is a grace period. Dog licenses are delinquent November 1. New residents and new dog owner licenses are pro-rated. Dog licenses purchased in another city are valid in the City of Norco for thirty days.

Where Do I Get a Dog License?
Dog licenses are sold at the City of Norco Animal Control Division and Shelter. The shelter is located at the extreme east end of Sixth Street, behind the Ingalls Equestrian Center. The mailing address is: 2870 Clark Avenue, Norco CA 92860. Our phone number is (951) 737-8972.

A current rabies vaccination certificate and proof of spaying or neutering of your pet must be submitted at the time that you purchase a dog license. Dog licenses may be purchased at the shelter or by mail.

How Much Does a License Cost?
Dog licenses for an unaltered (unspayed or unneutered) dog is $30.00. Altered dogs are $10.00. The rate for Senior Citizens (age 62 or better) is $2.00 each for the first two dogs and $6.00 each for the second two. Senior Citizens receive the reduced rate for dog license only if the dog is spayed or neutered.

What About the Coyotes and Skunks, Snakes and Other Critters?
The City of Norco is located on an ever-diminishing rural area. The City of Norco's boundary on three sides is the Santa Ana River. Most of the riverbed area is a wild life preserve and home to many varieties of wildlife, including migratory fowl, opossum, skunk, coyote and an occasional wild pig. The foothill, open land area, surrounding Norco is fast disappearing as it is being developed. This area is naturally populated by coyote, skunk, snakes (yes, there are rattlesnakes in the hills) and opossum, rats, mice and squirrels.

As man invades wildlife areas, the animals are pushed out of their homes, cut off from their natural food source and will wander through neighborhoods to occasionally dine on your pet's food if it is left outside. The urbanized coyote is fast becoming the norm rather than the exception. Your trash can, without a secure lid, is especially attractive and a ready source of food. So are your unprotected cats, chickens, ducks or small dogs.

Be sure to bring your cats and small dogs inside at night time and secure your outdoor fowl or poultry against skunks and coyotes. Animal Control emphasizes peaceful co-existence with our indigenous wildlife. After all, this area was their land and home first. If you have any questions regarding how to cope with our wildlife, contact Animal Control at (951) 737-8972.
